Description
Purpose:
-
- Spirovac is specifically formulated for the active immunization of cattle, targeting the prevention of kidney colonization and urinary shedding of Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar Hardjo. By addressing these critical aspects of infection, the vaccine aims to mitigate the risk of disease spread and reduce the overall prevalence of this pathogen within cattle populations.
Efficacy:
-
- Onset of Immunity: Protection begins approximately 3 weeks after vaccination.
- Duration of Protection: Proven to last up to 12 months based on challenge studies with Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar Hardjo.
- Effectiveness in Infected Cattle: For cattle that are persistently infected with Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar Hardjo, the vaccine reduces urinary shedding of the pathogen but does not eliminate renal colonization. This reduction in shedding is observed approximately 4 weeks after vaccination, though the duration of this effect is not fully established.
- Limitations: The vaccine does not prevent abortion in cows with existing placental infection. Additionally, the broader epidemiological impact of reduced urinary shedding remains unproven.
Dosage & Administration:
-
- Dose: 2 ml
- Method: Administer via subcutaneous injection, preferably in the neck.
-
Preparation: Shake the container thoroughly before use.
Vaccination Schedule:
-
- Initial Vaccination:
- Administer two doses, each 2 ml, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.
- Calves as young as 4 weeks can be vaccinated.
- Revaccination:
- Provide a single 2 ml dose annually.
- Initial Vaccination:
Withdrawal Period:
-
- Meat and Milk: Zero days
Additional Information:
-
- Diagnostic Testing: Vaccinated cattle may test positive for leptospirosis in diagnostic tests, which could affect their eligibility for export to certain countries.
Key Benefits:
-
- Prevention of Colonization: The vaccine helps prevent the bacteria from establishing itself in the kidneys, thereby minimizing long-term infection reservoirs.
- Reduction in Shedding: By reducing the amount of Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar Hardjo excreted in urine, Spirovac lowers the likelihood of environmental contamination and subsequent transmission to other animals.
- Infection Control: Effective vaccination can contribute to broader herd health management by controlling the spread of leptospirosis, which is crucial for maintaining the productivity and well-being of cattle.
